Best Things to Plant In August

Cucumbers

Cucumbers grow very fast this time of the year. The warmer temperatures allow them to thrive in August and transition into cooler weather. They will be ready for harvesting as soon as 40 days after planting but can take a bit longer depending on the type of cucumber. The best cucumbers to plant in August are bush types versus vining types if planting in containers. Some cucumbers to try to plant are Pick a Bushel and Honey Plus. 

Cabbage

Cabbage needs at least 6 hours of sun per day to grow properly, making August the perfect time to plant it. With the changing season, cabbage can tolerate cooler temperatures than other vegetables, and can even have a better taste with some light frost. Cabbage is able to be planted in small places if you do not have as much room in your garden. Some types of cabbage to plant are Baby Choi or Sweet Thang. 

Spinach

The best time to plant spinach is mid-to-end of August. Spinach needs cooler temperatures, and the changing seasons will allow the spinach to grow perfectly. In the fall, the soil becomes moisture, allowing the spinach to thrive. Make sure you plant it in rows with little soil on top. It is also best to plant them in between taller vegetables to cover them from the harsh sun if planting earlier in August. Some types of spinach to try to plant are Noble Giant and Bloomsdale Longstanding. 

Radishes

Radishes grow rather rapidly in the fall, so now is the perfect time to start planting. Radishes grow fully around 30 days. If you wait too long to harvest them, they can become too woody to eat. With fall coming up, August is the time to start planting because if it gets too cool in September, they will not properly grow. Try some French Breakfast or German Giant radishes in your garden. 

Snapdragons

Start planting snapdragons– not only do they grow great in the heat, but they do not mind a little bit of cooler weather. They also love the low temperatures during the nighttime. Snapdragons will also bloom a lot right before the first hard frost, so you will have plenty of time to enjoy them. Snapdragons work well in both garden beds and planters. Some types to plant are Madame Butterfly or Apple Blossom. 

Chrysanthemums 

Chrysanthemums can be tricky if you plant them late in the season due to their roots not being able to be established; however, if you plant them now, you will be able to see them grow again next year. Planting them in the ground in August will allow you to enjoy them and see them grow from their roots. But make sure you buy the plants that are already full-grown– this will allow them to come back next year and so you can see how beautiful they are in the fall. Some types of Chrysanthemums to plant are Mammoth Daisy Quill and Matchsticks.
