Mowing Your Lawn

Crass cutting is a weekly ritual for most home owners. Here are some things to remember to help you get the best out of your program and your lawn in the months ahead.

Start with a sharp blade

You would not want to shave with a dull razor… Right? The same goes for your lawn. Mowing is pruning. Proper mowing increases the density of the lawn, which helps to decrease weeds. Be sure to mow when the grass is dry. The blades are upright when they are dry and less likely to slump when they get cut.

Stick to the 1/3 Rule

Never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade length at any one time. A healthy lawn can survive an occasional “close cut” however repeated close mowing, or scalping produces a brown lawn and has several harmful side effects.

Did you Know?

Be sure to change the pattern each time you mow. Grass develops a “grain” based on your cutting direction, tending to lean towards the direction that you mow. Alternating your cutting patterns causes more upright growth resulting in a healthier lawn.

Leave your clippings on the lawn unless they form clumps or rows. “Grass Cycling” returns nutrients and nitrogen back to the root system of the lawn.

Reduce your mowing frequency and raise the mowing height on your mower during hot, dry weather season. The hot dry weather slows down the lawns growth rate. We recommend that you mow to a height of 3 to 3.5 inches.
